What is ISM' Model United Nation's Really About?

Written by Michelle Davi

This year ISM has rekindled the chance for our students to attend the exciting diplomatic event of Model United Nations, which will take place in Colegio International de Caracas (CIC) from the 18th to the 19th of November. The school will count with two delegations of four students with a full range of freshmen to seniors. The students will be under the leadership and supervision of history teacher Mr. Oscar Baiz. Considering the international turmoil, we have experienced in 2022, the MUN councils will address very interesting and polemic issues on this occasion. And it will also count as a good opportunity to experience international affairs and meet experienced delegates and international students.

ISM´s representation in the United Nations Security Council, dealing with international peace and security issues, counts with 2 delegates: Nicole Rivas representing the United Kingdom and Jose Joaquin Tirado representing France. The UNSC will be debating on the biggest and harshest issues posing a threat to peace on an international level; these include the Mainland Tensions of Peace in China and Taiwan, the rise of cyberwarfare and cybercrime in relation to the Ukraine war, and the leverage of nuclear power generation for peace.

The UNSTD, The Commission on Science and Technology for Development, will count with three ISM delegates, Sofia Moreno as Germany, Fabiana Mendoza as Japan and Diego Perdomo as the United States. The technology commission will discuss upcoming technological developments, in this case the Sustainability of The Line City Project in Saudi Arabia and the 4th Industrial Technology Revolution for developing countries.

Lastly, the UNCT, or United Nations Counter Terrorism Office, will focus on the issues of international terrorism financing and endangered child soldiers in Nasarawa. Three delegates will represent ISM: Sophia Lopez as The United States, Michelle Davi as The Bahamas, and Camila Morocoima as Iceland. The ISM representatives will be looking forward to forming alliances and working with other delegates in resolving these controversial and important world issues. Let's give the diplomatic Jaguars support in the upcoming event.

Good luck, Jaguars!
